Home > How to configure email clients for Lumison POPboxes > Using Mozilla Thunderbird - switching from POP3 to IMAPS.
To migrate from using POP to IMAPS email collection we recommend that you disable your current POP account configuration and add a new IMAPS account. If your existing account uses global storage, so that mail is stored in the local folders, it should be safe to later remove the POP3 account but as thunderbird can also store mail in a destinct folder we recommend leaving it disabled unless you are sure that you are not going to lose mail. If in doubt back up your existsing mail before proceeding.
.Open Thunderbird and from the ‘tools’ menu choose ‘account settings’.
.In the ‘Account settings’ dialogue select ‘server settings’ for your existing POP3 account, uncheck the ‘Check for new messages at startup’, ‘Check for new messages every’ and ‘Automatically download new messages’ checkboxes
.In the ‘Account settings’ dialogue click the ‘Add account’ button to open the new account wizard.
.In the ‘New account setup’ dialogue check ‘email account’ and press the ‘Next’ button.
.In the ‘Identity’ dialogue enter your ‘name’ and ‘email address’ then press the ‘Next’ button.
.In the ‘Server information’ dialogue check ‘IMAP’, Enter ‘mail.lumison.net’ as the incoming server and press the ‘Next’ button.
.In the ‘Usernames’ dialogue enter your ‘username’ and press the ‘Next’ button.
.In the ‘Account name’ dialogue enter a name to identify the account and press the ‘Next’ button.
.You will be presented with a summary of the account settings, press the ‘Finish’ button.
.In the ‘Account settings’ dialogue select ‘server settings’, check the ‘SSL’ option under ‘security settings’, note that the port changes to 993 and press the ‘OK’ button.
.In the ‘Account settings’ dialogue select your new IMAPS account, press the ‘Set as default’ button followed by the ‘OK’ button.
.You will notice that the new account folders have been created so now press the ‘get mail’ button and enter your password when requested, note that you can use the password manager to store the password if you wish.
.The imap folders will now download from the server. Note that this is a copy of what is stored on the server, unlike pop which downloads and deletes the mail.
